Four Loko packaging change to reflect true amount of alcohol
NEW YORK (AP) - The makers of the alcoholic drink Four Loko have agreed to change its labeling after the Federal Trade Commission charged them with deceptive advertising.
Phusion Projects said the labels will now state how much alcohol is in the drink. The company had claimed the drink had an alcohol equivalent of two beers, when in fact it contains as much alcohol as four to five beers.
The FTC sent warning letters in 2010 to Four Loko and three other makers of caffeinated alcohol drinks saying they present unusual risks to health and safety. All four companies agreed to remove caffeine and any other stimulant from their products.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says alcohol control boards in at least 13 states have banned Four Loko.
