U.S. Park Police closed a significant portion of Canal Road NW near Georgetown University on Tuesday while they removed a car that went into the canal on Monday night.
Police closed Canal Road between Foxhall Road and Arizona Avenue for the better part of Tuesday morning.
Authorities say a man drove off the roadway and into the canal at about 9 p.m. The vehicle was completely submerged.
The driver was subsequently arrested for DWI.
Park Police was assisted by Harbor Branch divers from the Metropolitan Police Department to remove the car from the water.
