WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray has tapped the former D.C. auditor to head the city's elections board.

The move comes about a month after Gray withdrew his first nominee because of concerns about his residency.

Gray announced Wednesday evening that he had chosen former D.C. auditor Deborah Nichols to chair the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics. Her nomination still requires approval by the D.C. Council.

Gray announced in September that he was nominating Robert Mallett to head the three-member board. But Gray withdrew the nomination because of concerns that Mallett, who had recently moved to D.C. from New York, was ineligible for the position because of a residency requirement.
