His mother left her son in the car with the keys in the ignition on Murillo Street.

The woman left her car outside when she ran into a friend's house and was horrified when she saw her SUV driving away.

"She was frantic...she was in a panic, she said someone stole the car with the baby inside,” said Kevin Coumes, a neighbor.

The mother told is us she pulled up to her friends house two doors down from Coumes North Springfield home.

Her son was asleep and she didn't want to wake him up. She took her 4-year-old daughter inside to grab something to eat. When she turned around, the Honda pilot with her son was disappearing down the street. Her friend raced to get Coumes.

The 32-year-old Coumes owns 8 percent bail bonds and is a former Marine.

"I had to think like a criminal what would be the best way to come out of the neighborhood,” he said.

With three possible exits, Coumes followed his instincts and raced about 2 miles to Backlick and Leesville roads. There, he found the Honda abandoned with the boy still in his car seat.

"He was fine, he was fine, he was smiling and asking for mama,” Coumes said.

Police believe the suspect left the car when he realized there was a child inside. Coumes’ colleague Stuart Womack wasn’t surprised to hear of the rescue.

"He is the kind of person who acts first and thinks later...he is a bail bondsman, doesn't surprise me he acted immediately,” Womack said.
