WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Attorney's office says a Washington tax preparer faces a sentence of up to nearly six years in prison her role in a scheme of filing false income tax returns that generated more than $14 million in refunds.

Federal officials said in a news release that 28-year-old Ladonna Davis entered a guilty plea on Tuesday to charges of conspiracy and first-degree theft. She also faces a potential fine of up to $100,000. A sentencing date has not been determined.

Authorities say Davis and others filed false federal income tax returns that produced nearly $14 million in refunds and false D.C. income tax returns that generated about $835,000 in refunds from 2006 through this year. Authorities still are calculating refunds generated by false income tax returns for Maryland and Virginia.
