GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A former National Archives employee has pleaded guilty to stealing and selling recordings from his former employer, including a 1937 sound recording of baseball legend Babe Ruth.

Leslie Charles Waffen pleaded guilty to theft of United States property on Tuesday in federal court in Greenbelt, Md. The 66-year-old acknowledged stealing at least 955 "sound recording items" which were seized from his Maryland home in October 2010.

Waffen worked at the National Archives and Records Administration for 40 years. Prosecutors and Waffen's lawyer disagree on the exact amount of the theft. Both say they were worth at least $30,000, though prosecutors argue they are worth at least $70,000.

Prosecutors are asking that Waffen spend at least a year and a half in prison. The maximum sentence is 10 years in prison.
