Local office cleaners get new contract
A bargaining committee reached a deal to avoid a planned strike involving thousands of local office cleaners.
- A strike by office cleaners was averted less than 24 hours before it was set to happen.
Nearly 12,000 workers say they were receiving inadequate pay and benefits.
Sunday night, the cleaners' union cut a four-year deal with the Commercial Building Cleaning Contractors Association, an organization representing the area's major commercial cleaning companies
As part of the plan, cleaners will receive an average yearly pay increase of four percent.
Union members must still ratify the tentative agreements.
The contract covers 5,000 commercial cleaners working in hundreds of commercial properties in Washington, D.C. such as Washington Square, International Square, Georgetown's Washington Harbor and One Franklin Square, according to a news release from the Service Employees International Union.
