Matthew Jeffrey Young, bicyclist struck, killed in Severna Park
A bicyclist has died after being struck by a vehicle in Severna Park.
Police say 40-year-old Matthew Jeffrey Young was riding his mountain bike north on Veterans Highway on Friday when he was hit by a car. Since there is no shoulder on this roadway, Young was riding in the right travel lane where there was little lighting, police say. According to an investigation, the driver of the striking vehicle did not see Young when he hit him from behind, throwing him into the windshield. Young was later pronounced dead at University of Maryland Hospital.
Police also say Young was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing. His bike, however, did have a make shift headlight and a flashing light on the back, but only the headlight was turned on.
The driver of the striking vehicle, identified as Larry Jay Vespermann, 64, of Dunkirk, Md., remained on the scene, police say. His vehicle sustained damaged to the passenger side of the front windshield, but he was not injured in the accident.
Police say alcohol or speed were not factors in the crash.
The Traffic Safety Section is currently investigating.
