Metro lines single-tracking after smoke reported at Union Station

(AP. WJLA) - Normal Metro service has resumed at Union Station after a fire broke out on the tracks, shutting down the station for over an hour and causing major delays on the Red Line.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says the fire broke out around 8:45 a.m. Friday and was extinguished shortly thereafter. He says it was started by sparking on the electrified third rail.
Trains passed through Union Station on the unaffected track without stopping for a period of time while crews ventilated the station and fixed the problem.
Officials say an "arcing stud" on the electrified third rail sparked the fire.
Trains shared one track between the Judiciary Square and New York Avenue stations. Riders should expect residual delays.
