1:17 p.m.: Gadhafi's son Muatassim killed in Sirte, AP reports.

12:30 p.m.: From the Associated Press: Relatives of the victims of the 1988 Pan Am bombing say they're relieved that Gadhafi is dead.

12:15 p.m.: Gadhafi is the first leader to be killed in the Arab Spring wave of popular uprisings that swept the Middle East, AP reports.

11:50 a.m.: MSNBC head takes White House to task for not following "common sense" in going ahead and announcing that Gadhafi is dead. I'm sorry. Since when does common sense translate to accuracy?

11:43 a.m.: Per the Wall Street Journal, "The chief Pentagon spokesman, Capt. John Kirby, confirmed that there was a NATO strike Thursday on a convoy fleeing Sirte. But officials don't know if deposed Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi was in the vehicles.

"There was a strike on a small convoy deemed to be a threat to Libyan civilians," Capt. Kirby said. "The air strike was effective."

Some news outlets have reported that Col. Gadhafi was in the convoy hit by NATO war planes. But Capt. Kirby added there has been “no identification” of who was in the convoy, and said the U.S. still cannot confirm that Col. Gadhafi has been killed." http://on.wsj.com/pL08ws

11:27 a.m.: A take from TMZ is always interesting. "Libyan officials confirmed Gadhafi was shot to death when rebels pulled him out of a storm drain early this morning http://bit.ly/n1RPIM

 11:21 a.m.: MSNBC is citing unconfirmed reports of Gaddafi's "body" being dragged through the streets.

11:14 a.m.: Numerous reports say White House wants definitive confirmation before commenting.

11:04 a.m.: Hmmm. AP seems pretty certain here, "The 69-year-old Gadhafi is the first leader to be killed in the Arab Spring wave of popular uprisings that swept the Midde East, demanding the end of autocratic rulers and greater democracy. Gadhafi had been one of the world's most mercurial leaders, dominating Libya with a regime that often seemed run by his whims and bringing international condemnation and isolation on his country for years.

10:55 a.m.: Per the Wall Street Journal, "Sen. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.) said in a statement: "Today marks the end of Qadhafi's reign and a new opportunity for freedom, prosperity and a voice in the global community for Libyans. The Administration, especially Secretary Clinton, deserve our congratulations."

Sen. Kirk, along with GOP Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Marco Rubio of Florida recently traveled to Libya to meet with Transitional National Council officials and rebel fighters.

10:24 a.m.: POTUS response is pending.

9:51 a.m.: Per ABC7's Pamela Brown, "From credible State Dept. source:

"We think he is (dead.) The NATO angle will be the most interesting. He tried to get out and an airstrike got the convoy then the TNC followed"

9:49 a.m.: Al-Jazeera just ran video they say is of Gadhafi’s dead body.

9:45 a.m.: Per the York Daily Record's Scott Blanchard, "Al Jazeera and Reuters are reporting he's dead. A-J cites "sources" but doesn't ID them. Reuters is pinning it to a National Transitional Council leader, but as others have noted, they've provided bad info before.

Washington Post, New York Times and BBC all being very cautious, reporting on an unconfirmed capture. AP's latest stories are about how the reports can't be confirmed by Libyan officials, NATO or the White House."

9:40 a.m.: NBC's Richard Engel says he trusts his sources that Gadhafi is, in fact, dead.

9:22: Visual confirmation seems to be the key here.

9:15 a.m. -- In this case, "reported," is the operative word. Media outlets are wary, and rightfully so.
