Killer of Md. psychiatrist in 2006, charged with killing roommate
(WJLA/AP) - Vitaly Davydov, who was ruled legally insane after confessing to killing a Rockville psychiatrist in 2006 with his bare hands, has been charged with the murder of his roommate at a Maryland state hospital, according to Maryland State Police.
Police have charged Davydov, 24, of Montgomery County, with first-degree murder and second-degree murder after he allegedly killed another patient with whom he shared a room in a maximum security wing of the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital in Jessup.
In 2007, judge found Davydov was not criminally responsible for killing psychiatrist Wayne S. Fenton, ruling that he was severely mentally ill. Davydov was committed to the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital in Howard County indefinitely.
Police say Davydov, came out of his room in the maximum security wing at Perkins Friday afternoon and asked a security officer for help.
Staff found Davydov's roommate, David Rico-Noyola, 22, of Anne Arundel County, on the floor. Police say he had sustained trauma to his body and head and was bleeding. Rico-Noyola was pronounced dead by an emergency room doctor.
His body will be taken to the medical examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.
Davydov is in police custody and will be taken to the Howard County Detention Center for his initial appearance before a court commissioner.
A motive for the murder has not been established. A nurse had checked the room less than 30 minutes prior. At that time, both roommates were in the room and nothing unusual was observed.
A trial for a Perkins patient charged in the slaying of a fellow patient in a medium-security wing last year was recently postponed.
