Suspects arrested in slaying of Demetrius Thompson
Two suspects in connection with the slaying of Demetrius Thompson, who was fatally shot on a Metrobus in Southeast D.C., are awaiting extradition from Florida to D.C.
Police arrested 21-year-old Vincent Gray and 22-year-old Delron Atchison in connection with the slaying, says an MPD spokesman. The suspects were arrested in Orlando, Fla., by U.S. Marshals.
"There is no closure,” said Taliya Thompson, the victim’s mother, but she is glad the suspects are “off the street so they can't hurt anybody else."
Thompson, of Southeast, was riding a W4 Metrobus near the intersection of 24th Street and Alabama Avenue Southeast when he was shot in the face and died en route to a hospital.
Police say surveillance video captured by a Metrobus security camera helped them find the two suspects.
Sources say Thompson was on the Metrobus when two suspects boarded the bus just after midnight. One of the suspects reportedly shot Thompson, then both fled the scene.
D.C. Police believe an argument occurred just moments before the shooting, Cmd. George Kucik said.
Thompson, a father to a 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, was unemployed but had just gotten his commercial driver's license.
He planned to become a construction manager and dreamed of becoming an architect, his mother and fiancé told ABC7 News.
"We had a future,” said Nikki George, the victim’s fiancé.
