Five students from Edison High School in Franconia were taken to a hospital after they came into contact with an unknown substance that gave them a rash Friday afternoon.

Hazmat teams tested the air and swabbed a classroom at the school trying to find the source of a chemical or substance that sent five students to the hospital.

“As soon as I walked into the main hallway I smelled a chemical, like a cleaning chemical like in a pool or something,” said student Abdullah Gardezi. “I don't know what it was. Everyone just said it smelled very bad.”

Twenty students were in their algebra class when kids began complaining of rashes. Hazmat officials say seven had reactions that weren’t life threatening. Students say they were told to get out of the school.

Hazmat officials say their initial tests weren't picking up anything. So for now, it remains somewhat of a mystery as to what caused the sudden reactions.
