Va. seeks input on state dementia-care plan
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A state commission is seeking public input on its plan to care for the growing number of Virginians with dementia.
The Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Commission has drafted a state plan to improve ways to diagnose, care for and educate Virginians about dementia. The proposed plan focuses on the needs of those who have dementia and their caregivers.
The commission reports that $216 million worth of unpaid hours were spent caring for Alzheimer's patients in Virginia in 2008.
The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/obyzM8 ) reports that plan proposals include: coordinate quality dementia services; collect and make use of dementia data; increase awareness and dementia training for caregivers; provide access to quality care; and expand resources for dementia research.
The public comment period runs through Oct. 19.
