VDOT keeps bikers in mind with policy plan
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is keeping bicyclists in mind as it carves out the state's transportation plans.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has completed its 2011 State Bicycle Policy Plan, which identifies the agency's vision and goals for the future of bicycling in the commonwealth.
The new plan being included in the state's transportation plan is intended to encourage biking by providing infrastructure for bicyclists.
The main recommendations in the policy plan will provide staff and resources to include the needs of bike riders in projects and programs; improve outreach and coordination of biking; and clarify bicycle accommodation policies.
VDOT said the plan is the first of a three-part series it has launched to create a vision for the state's bicycle and pedestrian plan.
