On Wednesday, police say the young boy was taken back to his mother in Reston by a caregiver. Police say they don’t know if the baby was responsive when he left the house in the car with the babysitter, but when the caregiver reached the mother's house, the baby wasn't moving.

The boy was quickly taken to Reston Hospital Center. There, medical personnel called police.

The child passed away shortly before midnight on Thursday after being transferred to Children's National Medical Center in Washington.

Neighbors say detectives spent the Wednesday and Thursday at the babysitter's house on Lakewood Drive. The Fairfax County fire department deemed the house, which is in disrepair, "unsafe for occupancy".

Detectives are continuing to investigate the death. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
