CRESAPTOWN, Md. (AP) - Maryland's prison agency says two correctional officers face possible termination after they were charged with assaulting an inmate.

Twenty-six-year-old Warren Mallow and 33-year-old David Robey were charged Friday with one count each of second-degree assault. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The defendants couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

The agency said they allegedly used excessive force by kicking, punching and kneeing an inmate in a cell on Sept. 28. The handcuffed inmate suffered a broken wrist. He also allegedly had his head slammed into a wall.

Corrections Commissioner J. Michael Stouffer says the agency cannot tolerate excessive force against inmates just as it will not tolerate assaults by inmates on prison staff.

He says both officers are on administrative leave.
