What’s the Montgomery County bag tax? A website tells you
October 6, 2011 - 08:17 pm
Montgomery County will introduce a bag tax come January and has launched a website with information for residents and retailers.
Under the law, all retailers will be required to collect 5 cents for each paper or plastic bag they provide to customers. Retailers get to keep 1 cent.
The law goes into effect Jan. 1, 2012. The website MontgomeryCountyMd.gov/BAG provides additional information to residents and businesses and is part of an education campaign in advance of the law. The county also plans to give out reusable bags. Stores can participate in free webinars, the county said.
Proceeds from the law are going to programs that fight litter and hedge against stormwater pollution, the county said in a news release.
