2 killed, 8 injured in I-70 accident near New Market
Two people were killed and eight others injured in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Frederick County early this morning.
The victims are identified as Selly Tle Sin Kai, 33, of the 200 block of Bishops Glen Drive and Anis Mawi, 46, of the 200 block of Appleton Place, in Frederick.
Both were rear seat passengers in a Toyota Corolla that was carrying five people. Neither were wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
About 5 a.m., traffic on I-70 east was stopped due to an unrelated incident at the New Market scale house.
The driver of a white Chevrolet 3500 van driving east on I-70 rear-ended the Toyota, forcing it to spin out of control into the median.
The crash caused a chain reaction that involved four other vehicles. There were a total of six vehicles and twelve people involved.
The Maryland State Police CRASH Team is conducting a detailed collision reconstruction of the incident. Troopers from the Westminster Barrack and the Frederick Barrack, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command and analysts from the Forensic Sciences Division responded to the crash. Sheriff Deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, officers from the Howard County Police Department and a Frederick County State's Attorney also responded to the scene.
Personnel from the State Highway Administration and CHART responded to assist with detours, road closures and debris removal. At 10:30 a.m., Interstate 70 was reopened to traffic.
No charges have yet been filed.
