Airplane noise in McLean neighborhoods causing concern from residents
In one neighborhood in McLean, airplanes from Reagan National Airport are making too much noise for residents’ liking.
Sandra Foppiano says she's seen an airplane cross over her neighborhood every minute on Tuesday.
“My baby, Ty, is always saying plane, plane, it was one of his first words he learned because he sees the planes very often,” said Foppiano. The noise is a concern for her.
“I think it would be better if we had less noise,” she said.
Now, a citizen’s association is complaining to the FAA and their Congressman. The McLean Citizens Association will meet Tuesday night with U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) at a public hearing about northbound air traffic from Reagan and the noise planes make as they travel over the area.
Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration are expected to explain new technology that they say will help lower the noise level.
The FAA says the new GPS technology will assist pilots in navigating along the Potomac River toward the airport, rather than flying over neighborhoods.
“I'm really looking forward to seeing what it can do to help reduce plane noise while keeping flights take-offs and landings safe,” said the association’s president Rob Jackson.
Once they cross the American Legion Bridge, many cut over land, crossing Langley Oaks.
“We just happen to be in the flyway out in and out of National airport so, we get all the airplanes here,” said resident Clair Gill. “The planes have actually gotten quieter in the last twenty years. It's not quite as bad.”
McLean Citizens Association is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Old Firehouse Teen Center at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd.
