Branch Avenue hit-and-run suspect may have been driving under the influence
Maryland State Police say that charges are pending against the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a Waldorf man on Monday night.
Police say that Eugene Kent Newman, 49, was walking on the shoulder of southbound Md. Route 5/Branch Avenue at about 7:20 p.m. when he was struck by an SUV that was driving in an "extremely erratic manner." Newman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers had already been dispatched to the area in an attempt to locate and stop the driver of the SUV. After the collision, the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence and transported to the Prince George's County Detention Center.
The subject was then turned over to officials on charges unrelated to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
