Disney Co. scraps planned hotel at National Harbor
OXON HILL, Md. (AP) - Walt Disney Co. is scrapping plans for a resort hotel at the 500-room National Harbor development in Prince George's County.
Disney in 2009 announced the purchase of 11 acres for the hotel, but a spokeswoman says the timing's not right.
County officials expected the company to serve as a critical component of the sprawling retail, residential, office and hotel development.
Jon Peterson, senior vice present of the Peterson Cos., the development's majority owner, says he's disappointed and that the company is looking to buy the land back for other opportunities.
Disney also canceled plans in the 1990s to build a theme park near the Manassas, Va., Civil War battlefield.
Scott Peterson, a spokesman for County Executive Rushern Baker, says the administration remains committed to economic development opportunities.
