RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Department of Defense has awarded Virginia $180 million to widen a highway serving Fort Belvoir.
Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the grant from the department's Office of Economic Adjustment on Tuesday.
The state plans to widen more than 3 miles of Route 1 from four lanes to six lanes between Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. McDonnell says 56,000 vehicles a day travel this section.
Construction could begin in 2013.
