(AP, ABC7) — Police are investigating a fatal bus crash involving an 18-year-old student on the James Madison University campus.

State Police say a female student was walking when she was struck by a city of Harrisonburg transportation bus at 9:52 p.m. Tuesday. The student died at the scene.

She was identified as Jane Hwang, a graduate of W.T. Woodson High in Fairfax.

State Police Sgt. Frank Ingham says the bus was going through a green light and making a left turn when the accident occurred. Hwang was wearing dark-colored clothing.

Police on Wednesday say the fatality was a case of the victim being inattentive and that Hwang entered the intersection against a Do Not Walk signal.

No charges will be filed against bus driver, a 56-year-old Hinton, Va. woman.

Tiffany Nguyen says Hwang offered to pick up dinner for her last night just before 10 p.m. That's the last she heard from her.

“She was on her way back,” she says. “We waited some more. She didn't come back."

Reza Mina says a gut-wrenching phone call from Hwang's ex-boyfriend, who was speaking to her when the accident happened, confirmed her worst fears.

Hwang is the fifth JMU duke to pass away in the past month, including the school's vice provost.

The recent tragedies have prompted students to wear purple to show their solidarity.
