Manassas Golden Coral restaurant invites veterans for a meal
A local restaurant honored the men and women who served in the military on Monday.
The Golden Corral in Manassas held a separate event this evening after the Veterans Day weekend, turning the restaurant into a mess hall between 5 and 9 p.m.
“It’s great it's like being back on board ship again with my fellow shipmates,” one attendee said.
“I think everybody is getting the fried chicken, cabbage and the mac and cheese is always good,” another added.
The national chain picked up the tab for thousands of active-duty and retired servicemen and women.
“I was one of the first in integrate the U.S. Marine Corps,” said WWII veteran Carroll Braxton.
“Somebody is still looking out for the people that served,” said Iraq war veteran Richard Cherney, who saw more action than he would care to recall. “We had a sniper hunting us for a while.”
All the money raised goes to the Disabled American Veterans Organization.
Vietnam veteran Jim Evans remembers Americans didn't always embrace those returning from battle.
Now, a meal on the house makes this Monday a memorable one.
“We as veterans want to feel appreciated for those who keep safe the homefront,” he said.
