Metro overhauling escalators
For Metro this is a reason to celebrate: An initial station is receiving its first new escalators in 15 years. At Foggy Bottom Wednesday, all three new entry escalators are up and running.
This work and the rebuilding of seven escalators at Union Station are part of a $5 billion, six-year plan that includes overhauling or replacing 153 escalators system wide.
Despite the potential of another significant budget shortfall next year, the agency says it has no plans to cut back on the repairs.
"What we are trying to do is increase the amount of resources that we bring into doing escalator maintenance, especially preventative maintenance,” says Richard Sarles, Metro General Manager and CEO.
However, Metro's general manager would not rule out another price hike.
