The Washington Examiner reports that Metro expects ridership to drop as much as 5 percent in the next year; a number that could get worse if transit benefits to federal workers get slashed.

Metro's projected numbers come at a time where the agency is battling multiple issues, from escalator breakdowns to delays to overcrowding on trains.

A reduction in the subsidy that federal workers can claim to use Metro every month - from $230 to $125 starting Jan. 1 - may cause a further drop in use, WMATA says.
