Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos has been kidnapped, according to a reporter from the Denver Post's bilingual website VivaColorado.com.

Ramos hails from Venezuela. The reporter, who covers the Colorado Rockies, tweeted the news Wednesday evening. It has since been confirmed by Ramos' winter league team, Tigres de Aragua, the Washington Times reports.

Sources close to Ramos' family confirmed to the Washington Times that the family has not heard from kidnappers, the Times' Nats writer wrote on Twitter. The paper El Nacional had previously reported that the family had only spoken to police, but not heard from the kidnappers. The paper said Ramos was kidnapped by four gunmen near his home in Valencia.

Kidnappings are a common problem in Venezuela. The mothers of former MLB players Victor Zambrano and Ugueth Urbina were both kidnapped at one point, along with the son of former Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba. The players and their families are often targeted because of their wealth and stature.

The 24-year-old just completed his rookie season with the Nats, hitting .267/.334/.445 in 435 plate appearances, slugging 15 home runs.
