New study puts D.C.-area highways among nation's most unreliable
A study by the Texas Transportation Institute says stretches of Interstates 70 and 95 as well as parts of the Beltway are among the country’s most unreliable highways.
The study specifically breaks down the worst of the worst roads commuters travel daily.
The Texas Transportation Institute and traffic tracking company Inrix compiled the rankings of the most unreliable roadways, in other words, corridors that delay us the most.
Five of the nation's 45 worst highways are in the D.C area, including I-70 between Route 144 and Route 15 in Frederick, I-95 southbound between I-395 and Russell Road, and the inner loop of the Beltway between Springfield and New Hampshire Avenue.
New projects like the inter-county connector, HOT lanes on the Beltway and Metro expansion are expected to ease some of the congestion. It can hardly get any worse, commuters say, especially at the outer loop of the Beltway between Route 1 and Georgia Avenue in Maryland, which was named the third slowest stretch of road in the country during rush hour.
Here's where D.C. area roads rank among the most unreliable roads calculated by the study:
#11 – I-17 westbound between Md. Route 144 and U.S. 15
#15 – I-95 southbound between I-395 and Russell Road
#16 – U.S. 50/U.S. 301 eastbound between I-97 and Md. Route 70
#27 – Capital Beltway Inner Loop between I-95/I-395 and New Hampshire Avenue
#45 – Capital Beltway Outer Loop between Route 1 and Georgia Avenue
#58 – I-270 northbound between Middlebrook Road and Md. Route 109
#78 – I-39 northbound between I-95/I-495 and the Southwest Freeway
#78 (tie) – I-95 northbound between Dale Boulevard and Va. Route 123
#146 – Capital Beltway Inner Loop between New Hampshire Avenue and Kenilworth Avenue
#162 – Baltimore-Washington Parkway northbound between Annapolis Road and Powder Mill Road
#189 – I-66 eastbound between the Prince William Parkway and Patrick Henry Drive
#244 – I-66 westbound between Lee Highway and Chain Bridge Road
#275 – U.S. 50 westbound between Garden City Drive and Columbia Park Road
#314 – I-395 southbound between Quaker Lane and Duke Street
