Sunday Lewisdale house fire claims two more victims
Two more people who were inside a home in Lewisdale when it caught fire Sunday morning have died, Prince George's County Fire officials say.
The deaths bring the toll in Sunday's fire, which consumed a home in the 2400 block of Griffen Street in Lewisdale, to three. A 6-year-old boy died at Washington Adventist Hospital in the immediate aftermath of the fire.
The fire broke out at about 3:45 a.m. on Sunday. When firefighters arrived, they found an adult female, later identified as the grandmother of the youngest victim, who had escaped the fire to alert her daughter, sister and grandson.
Firefighters then removed the child, identified as Omari Noel, and two women, Simone Anne Munroe and Janet Assing-Macklin, from the burning home. They were all taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Omari could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead on Sunday morning. Munroe, 36 and Assing-Macklin, 61, remained in critical condition until they died Tuesday.
Sixty two-year-old Merle Munroe collapsed in tears when she talked about those horrifying Sunday morning hours.
The smoke woke her and she ran to the kitchen door, she said. When she got out, she desperately tried to get her family to follow her.
“I went to get my sister, to wake up my sister, and I couldn't get in to save my sister,” she says.
The deceased are Munroe's sister, daughter and grandson.
“They brought my sister out after and she was burned on the side of her face,” she says.
While her family tries to reassure Munroe there was nothing more she could have done, she continues to ask herself wrenching questions.
“I didn't do enough, that is what I keep telling myself,” she says. “All the time what could I have done to save their lives?”
