Woman arrested for silicone injections
A 45-year-old D.C. woman is accused of illegally injecting women with liquid silicone, selling the procedure as a way to achieve a fuller behind.
Kimberly Smedley was arrested in D.C. last month at the JW Marriott hotel and charged with distributing unapproved and/or misbranded devices in violation of federal law.
“We've seen complications from this they may look fine for awhile,” Dr. Steven Hopping, a cosmetic surgeon, said about the procedure.
Smedley was previously arrested in 2008 on similar charges. The Washington Examiner reports that an exotic dancer from Baltimore told federal investigators that she paid Smedley $4,000 for nine injections in each side of her buttocks.
She was hospitalized two days after her latest injection from shortness of breath and a tomography scan found silicone inside her lungs, according to court records, the Examiner writes.
Silicone side effects include hard lumps, ripples, skin discolorations and infections. Medical silicone is sold in the U.S only to doctors but can be obtained from foreign countries.
