Is "whatever" really the most annoying word in conversation?

Whatever, man.

For the second straight year, a Marist (N.Y.) College report says that 'whatever' is the single most annoying word used in casual conversation in a national poll.

Whatever earned 38 percent of the vote of more than 1,000 randomly selected adults. The word earned 39 percent of the tally in 2010.

"Like," a word the poll calls "verbal filler," came in second with 20 percent, while "you know," "just saying" and "seriously" round out the top five.

In 2010, "whatever" and "like" came in at number one and two as well, but the terms last year included "you know what I mean," "to tell you the truth" and "actually."
