Corey W. Hankerson accused of offering unlicensed financial service
The state of Maryland has issued a Cease and Desist Order against a Silver Spring man who the Attorney General says defrauded people out of thousands of dollars with promises of helping people with financial difficulties.
Attorney General Douglas Gansler says that the order has been placed against Corey W. Hankerson, and his business, The Equity Law Group LLC.
The state alleges that Hankerson was offering legal assistance and credit services to people without a license to practice law or any experience as a credit services professional.
At least three people say they're owed a combined $5,000 from Hankerson when they paid him for services that were not rendered.
"Offering legal assistance or credit services without a license exploits those consumers who find themselves in trouble and desperate for help," Gansler said in a statement.
Hankerson allegedly charged people thousands of dollars to help them resolve severe financial problems, modify loans, represent them in bankruptcy proceedings and stop foreclosures. He provided clients little to no service, according to the state's Consumer Protection Division.
The Division has ordered Hankerson to return all funds he received from clients for the unlicensed services he sold.
