Extra I-66 westbound lane opened to ease heavy congestion

Some much needed relief is coming to one of the most congested corridors in the D.C. metro area.
On Monday night, VDOT opened up an auxiliary lane on westbound Interstate-66 in Arlington, freeing up more space for your commute.
The new lane runs from a two miles stretch between Fairfax Drive and Sycamore Street.
For so long, commuters have complained that the problem lies with the sheer volume of drivers that use the road during peak hours. Traffic officials are hoping that the new lane will help ease congestion.
VDOT says that the new lane is the first of three improvements to be made to help free up traffic and improve safety on the vital highway.
Expansion of I-66 has been a contentious issue. When the highway was built, Arlington was promised that it would only be two lanes in each direction. However, advocates for the widening of the road say circumstances have changed.
Future improvements are planned between Haycock Road and Westmoreland Street, and from Lee Highway to Glebe Road.
