Harry Thomas reaches agreement on loan debt

WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. has reached an agreement with the federal government to repay an outstanding student loan debt.

The agreement, though not the amount Thomas will pay, was announced during a Wednesday hearing. Thomas incurred the debt by taking out two federally guaranteed student loans of approximately $5,000 in 1983 and 1984.

The government said he owed thousands more in interest.
A lawyer representing the government said Thomas has agreed to make monthly payments.

The outstanding loan isn't the only legal trouble Thomas faces. He has been under investigation for several months since being accused of diverting more than $300,000 in city funds for personal use. Thomas agreed to repay the money but did not acknowledge any wrongdoing. FBI and IRS agents recently searched his home.
