I-95 HOT lanes deal approved, deal includes extension, widening

A deal has been reached to build high-occupancy toll lanes on Interstate-95 in Northern Virginia.

VDOT says that a private contractor will take on the nearly $1 billion deal. WTOP reports that the deal between Virginia and Fluor-Transurban, an Australia-based company, will last for 73 years.

The project will use the existing, reversible HOV lanes on I-95 and will eventually include their expansion from two lanes to three.

Construction of nine more miles of lanes, south to Garrisonville Road in Stafford County, is also in the working.

Tolls on the new HOT lanes will depend on the time of day, distance traveled and traffic volume, WTOP says.
