WASHINGTON (AP) - A government watchdog agency is reporting that significant improvements have occurred in the management of Arlington National Cemetery in the last year following reports of widespread problems that included misidentified gravesites.

While the report Thursday from the Government Accountability Office urges even more improvements to be made, it also questions the wisdom of transferring cemetery management from the Army to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The cemetery has been under scrutiny since reports in 2009 and
2010 indicated problems of misplaced or unidentified graves, as
well as general mismanagement. The top two officials were forced
out and replaced with Executive Director Kathryn Condon and
Superintendent Patrick Hallinan, who have earned praise from
Congress for instituting reforms.

Another progress report mandated by Congress is due next week.
