WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate is backing a requirement of military custody for suspected terrorists, even ones seized on U.S. soil.

On a vote of 55-45, the Senate rejected an effort by Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein to limit the provision in the defense bill to terror suspects captured outside the United States.

The language applies to a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates and involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States.

The White House has threatened a veto of the defense bill, arguing that the provision challenges the "fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets."

The Senate is pushing to wrap up work on the overall bill by day's end.
