John Thompson, on air, announces his WTEM departure
Daybreak Daily’s Friday afternoon zip through the pop-culture aisles finds a local icon calling it a day, a ho-hum engagement announcement, other things, and the mystery music video.
COACH: John Thompson – dad, not son – announced his talk-show departure from WTEM radio during this afternoon’s show. His final show will be in February. The move wasn’t unexpected.
STOP THE PRESSES: Or not. Or whatever, per People, “Britney Spears and Jason Trawick certainly had a lot to celebrate this month. Not only did the pop star and her beau celebrate their 30th and 40th birthdays, respectively, a source confirms to PEOPLE they're now engaged!” http://bit.ly/uvRTBn
BUT THERE’S MORE: As in, The Ring, per E!, “E! News has confirmed that celeb favorite and jewelry designer extraordinaire Neil Lane designed Britney's engagement ring. According to Lane's rep, Trawick personally worked with the designer to craft the diamond-bearing band into Spears' "dream ring." http://eonli.ne/u42c8G
BIEBER WOWS ‘EM: This wasn’t your average Vegas gig, per the AP, “It was clear at one Las Vegas school Friday morning that the mid-December chill wasn't cooling down Bieber fever. . . The 17-year-old star's concert came along with a $100,000 donation to Whitney Elementary, which has garnered publicity for providing needy students' families with food, clothes, money for utility bills - and just about everything in between.” http://apne.ws/uG9KAJ
ETTA JAMES: Per Access Hollywood, ““At Last” and “Tell Mama” blues singer Etta James, whose health has been fading in recent years, is now terminally ill, and her live-in doctor is asking for prayers. Dr. Elaine James, who isn’t related to the 73-year-old entertainer, tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper that the singer’s chronic leukemia was declared incurable two weeks ago.” http://bit.ly/tyfHbC
CAT FIGHT: Please. Per TMZ, “Lindsay Lohan’s nude Playboy spread did NOT live up to the hype ... so says someone who's DEFINITELY in a position to judge -- 2010 Playmate of the Year Hope Dworaczyk. Hope was out in L.A. yesterday -- leaving a waxing salon called Stript Wax Bar -- when we asked about the pics ... and she replied, "I saw that spread ... and I was not impressed." http://bit.ly/v6RTQQ
HITCHENS: Either you knew of him or you didn’t. No matter, and he wouldn’t have cared, per the Los Angeles Times, “Agree with him or not, it was impossible not to be stirred by Christopher Hitchens' willingness to stake out unpopular positions and to say things that others weren't willing to say. Even near the end of his life, Hitchens had a coldblooded willingness to face reality head-on.” http://lat.ms/vfj9WO
SHOCKING: Just shocking. Who knew? Per Radaronline, “Kris Humphries is telling his friends and family that his soon to be ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and her reality shows are way more fiction than fact, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.” http://bit.ly/s3EnPy
