In the first part of 2012, Montgomery County plans to add 10 more cameras to monitor the roads, doubling the number of portable devices. Currently, the county has 68 cameras; 58 in a fixed location, 10 portable and six vans with speed monitoring equipment.

Traffic officials hope the additional portable cameras will help make longer stretches of major roads safer.

This type of automated traffic enforcement is expanding in other counties as well.

In Prince George's County, speed cameras are just months old and in 2012 the number will more than triple.

Adding about six a month, the total number of cameras will go from 22 to 72.
