Polar bears turn to cannibalism due to global warming, some scientists say
Some environmentalists are claiming that global warming is leading to cannibalism among polar bears due to a decrease in the bears' opportunity to hunt.
A picture taken by environmental photojournalist Jenny Ross in in Olgastretet, a stretch of water in the Svalbard archipelago, shows an adult polar bear dragging the body of a cub that it just killed across the Arctic sea ice.
The bears usually hunt seals but if these are not available, they will seek out other sources of food, even their own.
"There are increasing numbers of observations of it occurring, particularly on land where polar bears are trapped ashore, completely food-deprived for extended periods of time due to the loss of sea ice as a result of climate change," Ross said.
