Long security lines, flight delays, lost luggage. It's almost a necessary evil during the holiday travel season.

More than 1.5 million bags were lost or damaged en route between the months of January and October of this year, according to an Air Travel Consumer Report by the U.S. Department of Transportation released Monday.

American Eagle reported the highest percentage of mishandled bags while Airtran reported the least.

"I've been lucky," said traveler Cheryl Schultz. "I've been flying for 20 plus years and have had late luggage twice."

Traveler Jackie Willett wasn't so lucky today at Reagan.

"It didn't come when I arrived so I went to the gentleman and he stated it was probably still in Dallas-Ft. Worth," Willett said.

The report found Reagan National airlines left on time 89 percent of the time, above the national average, while Dulles airlines departed on time 82 percent of the time and BWI flights left on time 81.5 percent in October.

Across the country, airlines had a good month in terms of on-time arrival, with 85.5 percent of flights arriving on time. For perspective, it's the ninth highest month in 17 years.
