Va. trooper, suspect shot on I-95 in Caroline County
THORNBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a man shot during a struggle with a trooper has died.
State police say in a news release that 32-year-old Herbert J. Wheeler of Chesterfield died early Friday at Mary Washington Hospital.
Sr. Trooper Michael H. Hamer was shot in the leg during the incident. He is recovering at Mary Washington.
A Department of Motor Vehicles special agent attempted to stop Wheeler for reckless driving Thursday afternoon on Interstate 95. Wheeler abandoned the vehicle in the median and fled.
Hamer later spotted Wheeler walking along the highway's shoulder in Caroline County and put the suspect in his patrol car.
Police say the two struggled in the car and Wheeler tried to get Hamer's gun, which discharged and wounded Hamer. He then shot Wheeler with another gun.
