Woman kidnapped near Verizon Center, sexually assaulted
A woman driving with her 15-month-old son was kidnapped Thursday night near the Verizon Center in Northwest D.C. and then sexually assaulted.
Police said the woman was driving in the 700 block of F Street with her toddler at about 7:30 p.m. when an unidentified suspect entered her vehicle through the passenger side door, police said.
The suspect forced the victim to drive more than three miles away to a neighborhood on Farragut Street, where police say the suspect sexually assaulted her while the baby was still in the back seat.
One neighbor heard all the commotion when the assailant fled the scene.
"There was a silver car,” says the neighbor, Archie Bailey. “Driver side door was open, car was parked right here."
Even on a night like last night, with no events scheduled at the Verizon Center, the downtown area is usually bustling with traffic and sidewalks are packed with people. One mother of two wonders how someone got away with the kidnapping and assault.
"And for something like that to happen to a mom,” says Teresa Greene. “That's horrible."
Police described the suspect as a black male who spoke with a Southern accent. He has a medium complexion, a mustache and was wearing all dark clothing.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746). Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department's TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.
