Craig Baxam ordered held until his trial

GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A former U.S. Army soldier accused of trying to provide support to a terrorist organization in Somalia has been ordered held pending his trial.

That was the ruling Wednesday from U.S. Magistrate Judge William Connolly, who agreed with prosecutors that Craig Baxam was a flight risk if allowed to go free.

The judge rejected arguments from Baxam's lawyer that he was merely "naive" and impulsive but had no actual plan to harm anyone.

Baxam converting to Islam shortly before leaving the Army last year. He is accused of leaving the United States for Somalia in December with the intention of joining the terrorist group al-Shabaab there.

He was stopped in Kenya before reaching neighboring Somalia and questioned by the FBI.
