D.C. area welcomes first babies born in 2012
Welcome to 2012 and the world!
It’s believed the first baby of 2012 for the D.C. area was born at 12:12 a.m. Sunday at Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
The mother, Irja Bonafede, gave birth to an 8 pound, 10.2 ounce girl. She is the first girl in the family and has two older brothers (who are happy to have a sister, we’re told).
Before the birth, the family was at the Baltimore Railroad Museum when Bonafede went into labor. Her husband rushed her to the hospital at about 7 p.m. Saturday night, the hospital reports.
The doctor who delivered Baby Bonafede is Dr. Courtney Harper, a Major from Andrews Air Force Base. She is willing to tell of the happy news on camera.
It’s believed that the second 2012 baby in the area was born at 12:49 a.m. Jan. 1 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Md.
The baby boy weighs 7 pounds, 14 ounces and both he and the mother are doing well, the hospital reports.
"We are pleased to welcome this first baby of 2012 and look forward to celebrating many more births at our hospital this year,” said Terry Francis, Director of Perinatal Services, in a statement.
Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring had its first birth several minutes later at 12:54 a.m.
Holy Cross Hospital's newborn was followed shortly by a baby girl born at Inova Loudoun Hospital at 1:01 a.m.
Several hours later, a baby girl was born at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, Md.
That 8 pound, 5 ounce girl was born at 3:47 a.m. Both mother and daughter are doing well, the hospital reports.
"As Montgomery County's first hospital, Washington Adventist Hospital has welcomed the arrival of babies for decades and recognizes the special experience of each birth," said Miriam Rieger, clinical nurse manager of Labor and Delivery at Washington Adventist Hospital. "We are excited to be a part of this birth and are looking forward to many more at our hospital this year."
