Girl, 6, left home alone in Bethesda sets off smoke alarm
Updated: January 19, 2012 - 07:26 am
A Bethesda mother who left her 6-year-old daughter at home alone while she went to a kickboxing class may face more charges after the girl set off a smoke alarm Wednesday, police say.
Police say the girl was left home alone at her home in the 6400 block of Rock Forest Drive on Wednesday night. While her mother was gone, she tried to put something in a toaster oven.
The toaster oven then began to smoke and neighbors contacted authorities when they heard an alarm going off.
When officials arrived, they found the 6-year old girl alone in an apartment. Her mom had gone out and had been gone for about 90 minutes, officials said.
By the time emergency personnel arrived, the fire had been put out.
Police say the mother has been charged with leaving a child unattended, but she may face further charge.
