Lanier, Cheh meet with NW neighbors on edge over crime increase
An upper Northwest neighborhood is on edge over a rash of crimes in recent days, a series of robberies, at least one in broad daylight.
Local leaders tried to give neighbors some peace of mind Thursday night in a meeting with police.
"A sense of security is pretty fragile and once you lose it, it's hard to catch it back," says D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier promises police will find those responsible.
One of the most recent robberies happened in the 4100 block of Livingston Tuesday night when a woman was robbed of her purse and cell phone at gunpoint, police say.
After seven similar robberies this month, Northwest residents say the neighborhood is on edge.
A robbery outside Torrey Shaw's home Tuesday night happened across from a busy playground, where the threat of violence has parents worried.
"I'm certainly not letting the kids go outside without me ever," Shaw says. "I guess we're more on guard than we normally would be."
"We're on the lookout, I try to keep an eye on the kids, you know, don't carry too many valuables," says Mona Idrees.
"The officers do a fantastic job and we will catch them," Lanier says. "It's just how many robberies they get away with before we do catch them."
Neighbors are on the look-out, including this woman, who says she may have seen the criminals as they cased her street...just two nights ago...
"They were shining a flash light, it was the driver," she says. "I could see it was the driver because it had a sunroof and the driver was holding it and flashing and looking and it was sort of going on and off. I had my cell phone right there and I called 911."
Police say these robberies are being done by as many as three young men.
They're also investigating the possibility the criminals are also robbing people just a few blocks away in Montgomery County.
