Friends and colleagues of National Park Service ranger Margaret Anderson gathered Tuesday to grieve her loss.

On Sunday, the 34-year-old Park Ranger was killed during a roadblock at the Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State.

Anderson worked at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland from 2004 to 2008.

Her friends heard of her killing early New Years day.

"Even though she left this park four years ago, she made a tremendous impact on all of us who worked with her," said National Park Service ranger Brad Clawson. "It's like losing a friend."

Authorities say Anderson was gunned down by 24-year-old Iraq War veteran Benjamin Barnes.

After an extensive search, Barnes' car was found containing weapons and body armor. His body was believed to be found in a snow drift.

Those who worked with Anderson at the National Park say they are stunned by her death. They wore black ribbons on their badges as a sign of mourning and remembrance.

Anderson was married to a fellow park ranger and had two young daughters. She had been with the Park Service for 11 years.
