January 21, 2012 - 09:50 pm
WASHINGTON (AP) - D.C. Councilmember and former mayor Marion Barry has been released from the hospital following a minor surgery.
Barry's chief of staff, Joyce Clements-Smith, says Barry was released as expected early Saturday afternoon from Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.
His office had earlier said he was undergoing a procedure involving the urinary tract.
The 75-year-old Barry has survived prostate cancer and had a successful kidney transplant three years ago.
He is running for a third consecutive term as the councilmember for Ward 8. He served as mayor from 1979-1991 and again from 1995-1999.
